Tools for transformation: Low Emissions Development Strategies

Marrakech (Blue Zone - Austral Room)

IDDRI, German Federal Ministry of Environment

    Time: 1:15-2:45 pm

This event will be webcasted on the UNFCCC website.

A deep transformation of societies is needed for keeping the global temperature well below 2oC or even limit it to 1.5oC. That is thus what has been agreed in the Paris Agreement. And to achieve that, all countries are invited to prepare and communicate long-term low greenhouse gas emissions development strategies. Those strategies are needed and important for countries to plan for the transformations required to reach low-carbon, climate-resilient economies. They provide guidance to pave the ways in the right direction, to keep investments consistent with low greenhouse gas emissions development and to structure domestic societal debate about future national objectives on development and climate.

This side event will present the efforts by different countries to develop long-term low greenhouse gas emissions development strategies, and the research and policy lessons on how countries can use this tool to coordinate this transformation in development paths. It will also present the importance of learning between different countries, regions, cities, and businesses on how to develop long-term strategies.
